As companies and individuals are more reliant on technology in everyday processes due to overwhelming move to remote offices during the pandemic, data becomes exponentially exposed to risks and vulnerabilities. This year, the UNICOM Engineering team echoes the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) to champion data protection and cyber safety for one and all.
NCSA leads the annual Data Privacy Day held each year on January 28 to empower individuals and businesses to acknowledge data privacy. Everyone, whether company or person, can get involved in the creation of a privacy culture. Data Privacy Day aims to inspire dialogue and encourage action in the realm of cybersecurity.
This year’s theme for Data Privacy Day 2021 is looking at privacy through the lens of the various changes the world has faced in the past year. With the goal of ‘Own Your Privacy’ and ‘Respect Privacy,’ here are a few tips to protecting your most valuable asset online: data.
Take back control over your privacy settings on web services and applications. Informed decisions about your data begin with understanding what you are comfortable sharing with which technology. For instance, it’s good to know who’s keeping an online record on you. It is also good practice to understand what is being tracked and analyzed about who you are, where you shop, and how you think.
Additionally, it’s a good idea to share essential data protection tips with the rest of your household, especially in a situation where data is made vulnerable through device sharing habits. Hold a family “tech talk” to discuss how each family member can protect their devices and information.
