These days, solution providers are discovering more and more ways to leverage computing at the Edge, and designing the right environment can be challenging. For industrial applications, platforms need to be high-performing, rugged, and reliable for years to come. That's why tier-one technology suppliers like Dell Technologies and Intel have teamed up to create the Dell EMC Edge Gateway 5200 (EGW-5200), a platform that focuses on providing the right mix of performance and reliability to support your next Edge deployment.
Bridging Operational Technology (OT) & Information Technology (IT)
Crucial to today's (and tomorrow's) Edge deployments is the bridging of Operational Technology (OT) and Information Technology (IT). To deliver tomorrow's business insights, these two components of a customer's environment can no longer operate in silos.
Instead, thanks to Edge computing, organizations can now combine the latest OT sensors with traditional core and cloud computing environments and other technology assets to create even greater value.
Reduce Response Time with Actionable Insights
With the right Edge platforms, solution providers can gather data from sensors in the field and then process and consolidate it. In doing so, Edge servers can effectively reduce the response time and bandwidth needs of the entire system by reducing the processing performed at the core.
Boost Artificial Intelligence Performance
While traditional AI architectures rely heavily on core or cloud platforms, Edge servers extend processing outward, allowing more processors to share the overall AI load.
Specifically, the Edge Gateway 5200 can boost deep learning performance by performing light AI inferencing on its own. Additionally, the platform features Intel's OpenVINO toolkit, which provides compatibility with many AI frameworks like TensorFlow and PyTorch.
Edge Connectivity with a Variety of Options
When it comes to leveraging Edge processing, connectivity is essential. The Dell EMC Edge Gateway 5200 offers a variety of options for connecting to existing infrastructure (aka northbound connectivity) with 3 Ethernet ports and support for Wi-Fi 6E, 4G, and 5G standards.
Thanks to the standard-equipped Intel Wi-Fi 6E AX 210 controller, the EGW-5200 allows for gigabit connection speeds over the uncrowded 6 GHz band.
And for connectivity to sensors (Southbound), the EGW-5200 supports Bluetooth 5.2, CAN 2.0, Serial RS-242 (as well as 422 and 485), general-purpose input/output (GPIO), and GPS location awareness.
Bluetooth 5.2 offers 2 Mbps (2x faster than Bluetooth 4) transmission speeds at up to 40 meters (compared to 10 meters for Bluetooth 4). Additionally, Bluetooth 5.2 provides reduced power requirements and higher reliability.
Enhance Edge Security with Active Management Technology (iAMT)
The EGW-5200 supports Intel Active Management Technology (iAMT) for remote deployment and troubleshooting for superior deployability and manageability. Plus, the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) allows for implementing a secure boot policy, accelerated encryption, and key storage for data privacy. Finally, with the Edge Gateway 5200, enhanced connectivity does not have to come at the price of system security.
Reliable and Continuous Performance
Dell Technologies and Intel understand that Edge installations aren't always easy to access or service. So the EGW-5200 is designed to perform 24x7x365 for years with minimal intervention or downtime.
The companies achieved this feat by building platforms that can handle extremes in temperature, air pressure, vibration, and humidity. Furthermore, in designing the EGW-5200, Dell Technologies has gone to great lengths to choose components with low failure rates, extending their meantime between failures. And as a further safeguard, the platform has a built-in, hardware-based watchdog timer that will perform a hard reset if an application or the kernel crashes.
And in the event service is needed, Dell Technologies has deliberately built the EGW-5200 platforms on the Intel Network and Edge group of products, assuring availability of components for at least five years. In addition, the same holds for the systems embedded OS, which includes the Windows 10 LTSC 2019, which has a ten-year lifecycle, and Canonical's Ubuntu which will be supported until 2025.
Finally, to efficiently function in as many locations as possible, the EGW-5200 is designed with a compact, fan-free design that reduces energy consumption.
